![]() Philosophy calls for plain living, but not for penance and we may perfectly well be plain and neat at the same time. Just as it is a sign of luxury to seek out dainties, so it is madness to avoid that which is customary and can be purchased at no great price. Our motto, as you know, is “Live according to Nature” but it is quite contrary to nature to torture the body, to hate unlaboured elegance, to be dirty on purpose, to eat food that is not only plain, but disgusting and forbidding. In his fifth letter, he refers to “living according to Nature” as being the Stoic “motto”: ![]() Seneca makes a number of references to Nature in his moral letters to Lucilius. Living in accordance with Nature in this context therefore means striving to improve our ability to reason through lifelong learning, and thus improving our ability to live virtuously (which is the ultimate goal of Stoicism). In other words, we can distinguish virtue and, by acting accordingly, live virtuously. ![]() Our ability to reason enables us to know the logic of what is good, what is bad, and what is indifferent. The Stoics believed that we have one unique human capacity that separates us from other animals – the ability to reason. It is also the most useful to us as it refers specifically to the Nature of human beings. The final meaning of Nature we’ll cover is probably the most commonly used one in modern times. Living in accordance with Nature in this context simply means a living being is successfully performing these vital functions. This encompasses vital functions such as nutrition, metabolism, growth, movement, and the many other processes that healthy specimens are naturally subject to. The second meaning of Nature refers to the natural process by which living things are created, change, and die. ![]() In chapter 8 of his Enchiridion, Epictetus summarises this attitude: “Demand not that events should happen as you wish but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well.” Meaning 2: Natural functions Living in accordance with Nature in this context means accepting that all events that have occurred were forever fated to occur. This view of Nature (or the universe) can be thought of in the same terms as Fate. Nature works to arrange things in the most rational way and since the world operates through reason, all things are determined and all events fit within its well-structured system. The first meaning comes from Stoic physics, which held that Nature (the universe) is a rational and completely ordered system. Stepping through these meanings separately should help clarify things. The main reason it is confusing, however, is that the “Nature” being referred to can take on a few different meanings. This is understandable it doesn’t have the immediate practical applications of techniques like the dichotomy of control, negative visualisation, or the reserve clause, nor is it a snappy one-liner from Epictetus or Marcus Aurelius that will change the way you think about life in an instant. Living in accordance with Nature is one of those Stoic concepts that isn’t initially easy to grasp. ![]() Definition Of Living In Accordance With Nature This short explainer will provide you with a straightforward understanding of what the Stoic concept of living in accordance with Nature is and how you can use the concept to guide your Stoic practice. ![]() ![]() If you're replacing a gas pool heater, you can use the following formula to determine your annual cost savings with a higher efficiency gas pool heater model:Ĭurrent Annual Cost x Other Factors Influencing Running Costsĭifferent States naturally have different running costs as the cost of natural gas for instance and the climate varies. *Figures based on a 1,000 square-foot, outdoor pool heated with an 80% efficient natural gas heater at $.80 per therm and uncovered for 8 hours per day. However, I have yet to find shields able to withstand even the smaller versions I have fielded (in those cases beam+pulse+overdrive for the truly insane). My old Titan would drain almost all of it's herculean 11'000'000'000 energy to fire it once, at which point it suffers a 60 second or so reload time. I have found Beam + Pulse + (insert desired effect) to be wonderfully powerful, the problem is the absolutely absurd power drain. So basically, what I'm asking is there good, effective weapon combos beside swarmer/seeker missiles and rapid fire cannons? What scale are they good at, should they have any place in a larger ship or more like fighter weapons? Any advice to diversify my ship designs? Mind you, my targets are pirate ishants which have practically no shields, so maybe the big hit guns are good against those, but all in all there seems little in the way of main weapon systems due to the low shots per minute and blocks absorbing damage like they do. Meanwhile the rapid fire cannon has sawed through the hull of the enemy all across the ship and laid waste like the big anti matter guns of old did. And yay, you got like 10 destroyed blocks IF you hit. Sure, good dps and all that, but it's shot, wait wait wait wait, shot. they feel like starter guns firing blanks. I don't know how to properly describe the feeling from beams and non rapid cannons. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong, but since the new ishant swarms (can they be somehow lessened btw? I often get 6-15 hordes right at the beginning.), small ships seem suicidal and large ship guns seem horribly ineffective unless it's missile (swarm seems best) or rapid fire cannon with maybe punchthrough or explosive effect. problem is, most of the combos seem really really bad. And, although measures to promote SEL are widespread at the European level, to our knowledge there are still few instruments in Italian schools which regularly monitor SE skills with a SEL approach particularly amongst the adolescent middle and high school populations, as is the case in many school districts in the United States ( Kendziora and Yoder, 2016). Moreover, the earlier in age this approach is put into practice, the sooner children and youth are able to become more self/socially aware and self-determined ( Davidow et al., 2016 Denham, 2018 De Lorenzo et al., 2021).Ī SEL approach is part of a health promoting school ( Turunen et al., 2017) which means it is necessary to engage the different components of the school community (School leadership, teachers, non-teaching staff, students and parents) in order to have a shared understanding of the importance of well-being and health ( CASEL, 2017 Cefai et al., 2018 Bada et al., 2019 Velasco and Meroni, 2021). In other words, promoting socio-relational skills can help improve students’ relationships with peers and teachers and increase their satisfaction with the school experience by increasing their academic engagement ( Durlak et al., 2011), thereby reducing school dropout ( Wang et al., 2016) especially after 2 years since the start of the pandemic which has profoundly changed the way we understand schooling ( Lattke et al., 2020). When implemented as a whole-school approach, SEL can help children and youth and those in relationship with them improve their well-being (individually and as a class) by promoting academic achievement, problem-solving skills, social inclusion in school, and a reduction in bullying and antisocial behavior, leading to improved school climate ( Greenberg et al., 2003 Durlak et al., 2011). ![]() SEL is defined as how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions ( Elias et al., 1997). SEL combines theories from different models ( Payton et al., 2000) which are mostly inspired on the social–emotional dimension such as Emotional Intelligence Theory ( Goleman, 1995 Mayer and Salovey, 1997), Social Information Processing ( Crick and Dodge, 1994) and cognitive/behavior change such as problem behavior theory ( Jessor, 1991), and social cognitive theory ( Bandura, 1998) amongst others. Teaching and learning these skills in a systemic way within a school context is often referred to as social emotional learning (SEL) which benefits students’ academic performance and relationships ( Payton et al., 2000 Jones and Bouffard, 2012). In Italy, they are mainly taught under the umbrella of social and emotional education and social training ( Cefai et al., 2018). ![]() These skills are also known by many names worldwide: from non-cognitive skills, 21st Century Skills to non-academic skills and employability skills ( Jones et al., 2019).
